I'd agree with this conclusion, but from slightly different avenue of reasoning (since my post argues against the proposal that religious feeling is required for a decent existence). You point to Bush's critical failing as a decent human being. He does not seek knowledge. He recoils from things he doesn't understand, and fears knowledge that contradicts his blinkered perspective on the world. This reveals itself in the bewildered expression, the lack of general knowledge, the dumbing down of complex matters to simplistic equations.
